Father Mike Travels to Jos, Nigeria

- Christians have been persecuted in Nigeria
Father Mike traveled to Jos, Nigeria on a mission on May 23rd and returned safely on June 3rd. He traveled with a team that included Fr. Gus and Deacon Frank.
During the trip, this message was received:
"Our mission team in Jos is well. Fr. Gus Calvo, Fr. Mike Neufeld, and Deacon Frank Lockwood have sent pictures...They have been visiting churches and a school in the countryside outside the city of Jos, and have been praying with fellow clergy. The people of the Diocese of Jos have a wonderful spirit who are very welcoming."
Like many places in Africa, Jos is a city that has seen much violence in recent years. Violent religious clashes between its Muslim and Christian populations occurred in both in 2001 and 2008.
The 2008 Jos riots involved Christians and Muslims and was the result of a local election. Two days of rioting left over 400 injured and 381 killed.
Worse than that, in 2001, riots between Christians and Muslims over the appointment of a Muslim politician, lasted nearly two weeks and over 1,000 people were killed because of the conflicts. The clashes started when a Christian woman attempted to cross a barricaded street. It led to a conflict between her and a group of Muslims, and it spread to other parts of the city. Christians were spontaneously attacked by Muslims according to reports.
Thank you for your prayers for Fr. Mike and his companion travelers while they were on their mission trip. Fr. Mike has a lot of great photographs. A slide show will be put together in the near future for the website.
Monthly Ministry Spotlight: Prayer Shawl Ministry
Sometimes there is nothing else you can do for someone other than to love them and pray for them.
Healing ministry has been an important part of our church, not only through the laying on of hands, but through another ministry: the prayer shawl ministry.
Prayer shawls are are crocheted or knitted wraps that are given to those who are ill or have other needs. These are not ordinary shawls, however. Prayer for God's healing love is woven into each and every stitch, so that when the recipient wears it, he or she is literally wrapped in healing prayer.
We have several dedicated individuals who have made and distributed dozens of prayer shawls, and the ministry is growing...Read More
